Cultural Cuisines

About Cultural Cuisines

A Wellsprings for Women Social Enterprise

Wellsprings for Women's Cultural Cuisines program grew by responding to the needs of marginalised women. These women from diverse backgrounds bonded and found a deepended sense of belonging through teaching, learning and sharing each others' culturally traditional dishes. Together they completed formal food handling qualifications and hosted cultural events for up to 60 people.

In late 2019, the program began to take on a flexible social enterprise model to allow the women to generate an income.

This program has led to numerous successful events and partnerships in the local community. These events have produced real change in the women's lives, and deepened cultural understanding in the wider community.

While the devastation of COVID-19 has impacted what is possible in the present, the women remain engaged and are working on their menus, cooking videos and ideas for a hopeful future. Wellsprings staff who support the program are also using this time to up-skill in social enterprise models and e-commerce.

Winners and finalist for

Victorian Learn Local Award 2020

Creating Local Solutions Award- Winner of People's Choice and Finalist for main category

Cultural Cuisines was a finalist of the 2020 Learn Local Creating Local Solutions Award and winner of a People's Choice Award.

The focus of the women's only Cultural Cuisines cooking program is self-empowerment, and ultimately further education and employment. It's conducted at Wellsprings for Women, an organisation that works with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Wellsprings Cultural Cuisines partnered with local agencies to access accredited training and a commercial kitchen for catering. The aspiration of the Cultural Cuisines group is to become a social enterprise offering employment to women who face barriers in accessing mainstream jobs.

As a result, 21 women have successfully completed the food handling certificate. Many of the participants have begun generating incomes, where they would otherwise have struggled to start a business on their own. They've developed wonderful friendships and connected to the community through food.
